My Trip to Peru

This spring, my husband and I spent a wonderful vacation in Peru. As a former Spanish teacher, I take particular delight in visiting a country where I speak the language of the people. And speak I did – with shopkeepers, waiters, hotel receptionists, taxi drivers – each person adding to my understanding and knowledge of the country and its people. Bernie and I found the Peruvians warm and friendly, their children charming and sweet. Being the shopper that I am, I was I heaven buying gifts for friends and myself, among them the beautiful Peruvian-style jewelry of silver and inlaid conch. Of course I bought lots of baby alpaca yarn for future knitting projects.

We spent a few days in Lima, went on to Cuzco, to Machu Picchu, then retraced out trail, back to Cuzco and Lima. We traveled in a small group: thirteen tourists, our wonderful guide, and – when not flying or traveling by
train – our able bus driver. Peru is a mountainous terrain with breathtaking vistas. The most memorable time for me was the morning spent exploring the incredible Machu Picchu.

Alpacas and llamas really do reside all over Peru– though I suppose not in the cities. How these animals fascinated us! I returned home, wishing I could keep a small alpaca in my backyard. Instead, I’ll have to suffice with the two llama pendants I bought to wear on a chain around my neck.
